By this point, 2020 seems like it has been more than one year long for many of us. Protracted restrictions, financial constraints for some, illness and/or absenteeism have simultaneously stretched the weeks and caused them all to look alike. Are you tired of it all? Feeling done and ready to move on? While you can't control what's going on out there, you can choose to change things inside. Here's why next year will be different (if you choose to accept this mission):
- You will have a game plan - If there is anything that 2020 has proved, it's that fortune favors the prepared. If you have not done it already, set 2021 up for success NOW by sitting down (virtually if you must) with your key team members and talking it out. Write it down in specific terms (actions, dates, and measurements), and communicate it throughout your company. Every team member has a part to play, and you need to let them know how they fit into the game plan.
- You will be taking the long view into account - Covid happens. Life happens. Detours happen. Despite setbacks that are many or few, get yourself and your operation back on track as quickly as possible. Down the road, this year will only be a small pothole in your rearview mirror unless you choose to sit in it. Re-center on and recommit to your really big goal, the 5-10 year one. Or if 2020 has changed you enough that your vision has been altered, flesh it out so that you and your team can see it clearly. Then plan around that.
- You will have a new view of the value of your team - Sometimes it's the risk of loss that causes us to sit up and take notice of the resources around us. Be grateful if your team is still intact and healthy, and be sure that you are doing everything possible to keep them that way. Thank them, pay them a sustainable and competitive wage, and continue to train them for bigger things.
- You will have perspective - Perhaps you used to be the optimistic sort who doesn't invest a lot of time in contingency planning. Perhaps your operating philosophy was always to "build it and they will come". Funny how the Big Red Bus that we talk about in executive succession conversations isn't quite so funny or remote a possibility when illness and even death have touched some businesses, and some industries in particular. Use the bruises from this year to become kinder, more peaceful, more authentic, more generous.
You know, it seems like next year will be different. More importantly, you will be different. We all will be different, because we all will have been changed by 2020. But you still have the opportunity to choose. That will not change. You have the opportunity right now to make choices that will make 2021 an outstanding year.
